Re: Anyone agree???
To me, I think it's all about the message it sends.
First of all, if it's not being done with the taxpayers' money, then it's hus business to do whatever he wants with it.
And he definitely has the right to celebrate and no one should begrudge him that.
But his campaign was based on this idea of "change" - focusing on the plight of the middle class.
I mean today alone, the unemployment report for October is coming out in NY, and is going to report a loss of 200,000 jobs.
While no one can tell him what to do with his money, or private money - if it were me, I might want to send the message to the people struggling that "I'm going to celebrate, but I get you. I get the struggles the US economy is facing, I get the hardships that many are going through trying to make ends meet, I get the fact that many companies are scaling back on holiday celebrations this year. So, as your president, and one of you, I'm going to celebrate, but will do so in a tempered and level manner."
I'm not saying his spending millions will hurt him in the long run, but if you really want to continue to connect with the American people, taking their hardships as your own, might be a good way to do it.

I think it's fine. Spending money does help the economy. If it is privately funded then all of the vendors will earn money. If he was spending taxpayer money, it'd be a different story.

I think that BOTH parties spent millions and millions of dollars on thier campaigns and spent the $ smearing the other candidates and defending themselves, and THAT money could have helped out America tremendously, instead of the both of them arguing over taxation amouts that come out of our pockets!
I agree- I would rather see money spent in celebration than in slander.
ETA: I am one of those people who believe people should be allowed to do what they wish with THEIR money- since the ball is privately funded- party it up!! It will stimulate the economy in DC and that's a good thing!

If the funds for the ball do not come directly from the tax payers money...then I say party on.
If it does come from the tax payers money then I think they should still have the ball....it is tradition...but it does not need to cost $1mil

I accept him as my president and hope he does well. If he does, and hopefully proves me wrong, I'll vote for him in 2012. That was NOT what this was about.

how about it spent on neither?? perhaps there is a better way to spend it period.
Again, I never said that the new president, whoever it was going to be doesnt deserve a celebration. However, I still feel with the state of the economy it is a bit of a slap in the face to the american people.
also, someone said that the economy has been in the toilet before. While this is true, it wasnt THIS bad. I mean, for certain stocks to go down to the price they were in 1950 shows something.

It is mostly privately funded...
If you accept him or not, he will be your president (as long as you live here)
As others stated before, he deserves to celebrate!
The only case where I think this would have made a difference is if BOTH candidates decided to spend less on their campaign, and any slander throughout it
Otherwise, he just accomplished what many thought was impossible...he deserves to celebrate!

typically, tickets are issued through state societies and the political parties, but it is possible to get in if you aren't involved. Here is the link for the NYS Society here in DC.
And here is the page for the Joint Congressional Committe on Inaugural Ceremonies page. The JCCIC only organizes the Swearing In Ceremony. The other two committees (Armed Forces, which controls the Parade, and the Presidential Inaugural Committee, which controls the balls and all other parties & events) have yet to be set up.
ETA- I was wrong, the Armed Forces Committee Site is up. Here's the link: Armed Forces Inaugural Committee

If it is private money, then what do you suggest it be spent on? If one were to say the money should be used to help poor families, the economy, etc. then newday has a point.
If taxpayer money is being used to fund a million dollar party, then thats wrong. But if its his own money, or money donated by people like Oprah whatever, then he deserves to spend it on whatever he wants. Besides, as it has been pointed out, this will help the DC economy. Think about all the people who will MAKE money from this. You have to remember when money is spent it is going to help. Its not like he is going to be throwing a million dollars up in the air to be taken by millionaires or to litter the streets/

As I said in a post above, which some others have echoed as well, this is a huge and NEEDED boost to the Washington DC economy. This is NO different from New Years Eve in NYC or holding the Olympics (both of which end up being PUBLICLY funded) in any city in this Country.
So, in my mind, it comes down to that. Do you want to help DC's economy, or not.

i think that yes he should have a HUGE inauguration with all th bells and whistles and money spent, (which can largely be financed from the reisduals from his campaign) and that anyone.. (not saying the that OP did this) but anyone who complains need to ask themselves this question...
Did you have commentary when he did his video highlighting people across america who were struggling? did you says something like: "my family struggled and we didn't need anyone to help us up?
did you ever make a comment like "i shouldn't be taxed for making more money'
or
'you don't make the weak strong by making the strong weak"
or that helping the poor at the detriment of the weak is 'socialism"...
ANYTHING similiar to those sentiments?
because if you did.. you are a hypocrite.. and here's why..
if it is NOT okay in your opinion for the gov't to worry about helping the poor and less fortunate by taxing the rich, then you should not be concerned with how a big expensive party looks when those millions of people are struggling to pay their mortgages..
if you were THAT CONCERNED with the millions of people having difficulty paying their bills.. you wouldn't mind doing something to help them.. if you were THAT CONCERNED with the millions of americans having difficulty with their bills, you'd be in favor of gov't intervention.. but you've already implied.. that it's NOT for gov't to help them.. so if it's not for gov't to help them.. then why can't gov't use that money to throw a party?
no lets be real.... you don't really care about those poor unfortunate americans struggling to pay their bills becuase when it was YOUR family struggling.. you did it on your own with no help from anyone.. remember?
you don't really care about the struggling families whose head of the household just lost their job because "if they were that broke they wouldn't be at mcdonald's" remember?
you just care about raining on Obama's parade..
HI HATER!!!
Like I said before I think he should have the Inaugural Balls (no more and no less the the previous ones). However, I think your diatribe and subsequent hater comment were unnecessary. This has been a very civil discussion thus far (which is rare on LIF ) and it is a very valid topic for discussion given Obama's platform and our current economic state.

Wow. That is a bit of a stretch. Glad you got that all out and hope you feel better. You could have just said:
"No."
and you could have just read it and kept it moving right.. do YOU feel better having responded?
a discussion board, by definition is for people to discuss things.. which lends itself to open conversation and dialogue.. not just yes or no answers.. .. just because you are not in agreement with my reasonings or beliefs doesn't mean that i should minimize them to a one word answer sweetie..
