Re: Anyone agree???
I agree with what some of the PP's said. It is not tax money therefore he can go and do whatever he wants for the inagural ball. He raised TONS of money for his campaign and can use the remaining money for the ball. This is a time for celebration and he should do that within reason.

i think that yes he should have a HUGE inauguration with all th bells and whistles and money spent, (which can largely be financed from the reisduals from his campaign) and that anyone.. (not saying the that OP did this) but anyone who complains need to ask themselves this question...
Did you have commentary when he did his video highlighting people across america who were struggling? did you says something like: "my family struggled and we didn't need anyone to help us up?
did you ever make a comment like "i shouldn't be taxed for making more money'
or
'you don't make the weak strong by making the strong weak"
or that helping the poor at the detriment of the weak is 'socialism"...
ANYTHING similiar to those sentiments?
because if you did.. you are a hypocrite.. and here's why..
if it is NOT okay in your opinion for the gov't to worry about helping the poor and less fortunate by taxing the rich, then you should not be concerned with how a big expensive party looks when those millions of people are struggling to pay their mortgages..
if you were THAT CONCERNED with the millions of people having difficulty paying their bills.. you wouldn't mind doing something to help them.. if you were THAT CONCERNED with the millions of americans having difficulty with their bills, you'd be in favor of gov't intervention.. but you've already implied.. that it's NOT for gov't to help them.. so if it's not for gov't to help them.. then why can't gov't use that money to throw a party?
no lets be real.... you don't really care about those poor unfortunate americans struggling to pay their bills becuase when it was YOUR family struggling.. you did it on your own with no help from anyone.. remember?
you don't really care about the struggling families whose head of the household just lost their job because "if they were that broke they wouldn't be at mcdonald's" remember?
you just care about raining on Obama's parade..
HI HATER!!!
Wow. That is a bit of a stretch. Glad you got that all out and hope you feel better. You could have just said:
"No."
and you could have just read it and kept it moving right.. do YOU feel better having responded?
a discussion board, by definition is for people to discuss things.. which lends itself to open conversation and dialogue.. not just yes or no answers.. .. just because you are not in agreement with my reasonings or beliefs doesn't mean that i should minimize them to a one word answer sweetie..
Actually I DO feel better. I hate when I have to bite my tongue. . .it hurts.

Re: Anyone agree???
I disagree, I think he should feel free to spend the MILLIONS plus on his Inaguaral Ball. Why?
Not only is it a historical election which deserves to be celebrated, those millions of dollars are going to allow DC waiters/waitresses, caterers, florists, musicians with money to pay THEIR mortgages.

I disagree 100% - He has just become the next PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES - Historic election or not, he's the PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES -
As far as I'm concerned he can spead as much as he wants on his innagural ball .......He EARNED the honor, he DESERVES the hoopla, and he's going to work his a$$ off for at LEAST the next 4 years running the country ......... Let the man have his celebration !! -
I'd say that for ANY president - Even George W. who I could not stand. - How many people become the President of a country ??? It's a HUGE deal !!

Re: Anyone agree???
It cuts both ways. He's the president, he's adored, and he deserves to celebrate as much as or more than the next elected official. However, all elected officals, from the president on down, are public servants. Unlike private folks, it is their responsibility to set examples, ease suffering, and actively show empathy. Their salaries are less than they'd make in the public sectoir, they become public figures and lose their privacy, etc. Trade-offs for the power--the responsibility of being not just a fellow citizen of the struggling, but their leader and their servant.
Both parties and all elected officals should be careful how they come off now--at this precarious time in our history. Obama just happens to be top banana.

I completely agree and I need to ask at what point have we not had struggling people in our country.
I live in the DC metro area and the area around the white house is the absolute worst. When has your neighbor being broke stopped you from celebrating your greatest achievements?
You really have to give me a break on this one.

Listen its hard to believe at least for me that you have nothing but sincere concern for the American, when I see you out of all people posting this question, because you were and are one of the biggest anti Obama posters on LIF, so when he wins and YOU say that having an inaugural ball would be a slap in the face of the American people, well its hard to believe for me its not a case of sour grape, or you trying got rain on his parade.
I just don't buy it.

How does being opposed to Obama equate to not being concerned about America or Americans?
It doesn't make sense. So what you are saying is that if you're not for Obama then you're not for America? It was a very valid question that snowflake asked.

Re: Anyone agree???
There should be inaugural festivities - they should be just as festive as they always are - these are historical celebrations and it is a huge day for this country. If it costs $5, $500,000 or 50 million, who cares - it is private money. No one should tell people how to spend it - unfortunately, there will always be people suffering, but does that mean that he needs to forgo his festivities, give money that was raised for his campaign, for other purposes - i don't think so.

Re: Anyone agree???
I don't understand why the idea is weird. We read about recession, depression on the way--hear about job loss on the news and on here. Christmas parties are being cut, we gripe about bonuses in bailout scenarios. QuotetheRaven made some great points about appearances and excess. If he were throwing his daughter a party or a wedding, I'd say he acts as a citizen, but in the capacity of president elect at this moment in history, he should avoid the appearance of disproportionate excess. Politicians are public servants.
Even with respect to his PRIVATE decisions, they become public fodder--like where those girls will go to school, and I'd even say that we should leave that out of public discourse (although we don't).... KWIM?

It is a valid question, and people have been answering and giving their opinions, which for the most part have been, no they do not agree with her. She keeps posting she didn't ask whether or not there should be a celebration. I don't really understand what she was looking for here. I am trying to believe she was being unbiased, but she doesn't seem to want to accept most people don't have a problem with spendng money on a ball.

Also, I'd like to know, has Obama already said he will be spending huge amounts of money on a ball, or are we just assuming based on history?
