Money Dance at a Wedding (POLL)
Did you have one? Do you feel it's tacky?
I just want opinions.
ETA: Every wedding I went to had one.
My DD is 20 and has only gone to 1 wedding.
The event planner talked about this and I had to tell her what it was.
It seems to be a tradition on the west coast.
She is not having a money dance.
This is a dance where you dance with the bride or groom and give them money. Not a cultural or religious reason.

I went to 2 weddings upstate where I saw it... I did only see them upstate. I thought they were nice for the couple to dance with their guests but the whole money thing I thought was tacky

Re: Money Dance at a Wedding
I had one but it's common in the Midwest where I grew up and got married, although we call it the "dollar dance" and most people give $1. About 90% of the weddings I've been to there had one. I just went to a wedding last weekend and they had one.
I don't think it's tacky unless the sole reason why you are having it is to make money. It's a fun opportunity to get to dance with the bride and groom and wish them well.

Re: Money Dance at a Wedding (POLL)
I went to 2 weddings in PA and they both did it but then again, no one gave money as gifts....it was actual gifts that the bride and groom got. Guess the money dance is a way for them to get a little cash to start their life.
I didnt do it at our wedding but if its the norm where you are, then who is anyone to say not to do it.

Re: Money Dance at a Wedding (POLL)
I did not have it at my wedding. In fact, any wedding I've gone to in the NE did not have one.
However, when my BFF got married in FL, she had one. I'll just say I was taken back and it's definitely not something for me!

My DD thinks she will look like a prostitute if they have one
It was the event planner that brought it up!

Re: Money Dance at a Wedding (POLL)
I think it's a tradition in some places.... in which case I think it's harmless and not tacky.
However, if your friends/family/culture doesnt usually do a money dance and you just want extra $$$, then i think it's tacky.
We didn't do one because it's not a jewish tradition -- we did the hora, etc instead. however, i think the money dance is popular and expected at greek weddings, so why not?
to each their own

Re: Money Dance at a Wedding (POLL)
I think this is more of a midwest/west coast thing.
We didn't have one at our wedding and no one in either mine or DH's local family has had one either.
The first time I saw one was at my BIL's wedding in New Mexico. The bride is from NM and as I understand it the dance is a tradition they do in her family.
They also did "la marcha" (sp?) which, again was a tradtion they do in my SIL's family.
Someone above mentioned Greek weddings having a money dance but in response to that I believe that dance is different. The Greeks, as I have seen sort of throw the bills around the bride. The "money dance" as I saw it done in NM was where you walked up to the bride and groom and gave them money to have a "dance" with them.
Side note: my SIL (my DH's sister) as a joke walked up to my BIL during the money dance with a quater and asked for change! Knowing my BIL and how cheap he is known to be, this was VERY funny!

I grew up in MI and this was common practice. It's called the "Dollar dance" there though.

I have only seen this done at a Greek wedding.

to the OP, I'm glad your daughter is going to do what she is comfortable doing

Re: Money Dance at a Wedding (POLL)
I have heard of it I've never seen it done and while I may personally find it "tacky", I do realize that in some nationalities it is customary so to them; it's totally normal so I wouldnt really call it that
It's all a matter of if you grow up with that as a tradition I guess

Re: Money Dance at a Wedding (POLL)
I saw something like it on A Wedding Story once, but it was more because it was a cultural thing. The bride didn't really have to do anything, they just threw money at her and had some guy going around with a broom and cleaning it up
Other than for cultural reasons, I think it's kinda trashy...
