I thought it was a Greek tradition.
The only wedding where I saw this was at my sister's and it was b/c she married a Greek and they had a Greek wedding.
Nope. See my response to MrsRivera.
There's a greek money dance and then there's another dance that is completely different.
Sorry, I wasn't aware of the differences.

I did not have one and I have never been to a wedding with one. I actually had no clue what they where until I started planning my wedding.

I know it happens more at GReek weddings, however the money I believe isn't kept by the bride and groom. I believe it is given to the band as an extra "tip"
It's at the discretion of the bride and groom if it goes to the band...

My SIL had one at her wedding. It was the first time I had heard of it. We didn't do it at my wedding but to each their own.

Re: Money Dance at a Wedding (POLL)
I didn't have one at my wedding & I absolutely don't like them.
However, in some cultures (Greek, I know for sure) it's a tradition. Who am I to knock someone's tradition?

I misunderstood. I thought the OP was referring to the "Money Dance" where the bills were thrown at the couple (because very often they're not just one dollar bills.) I thought the other type was referred to or called the "Dollar Dance".

I've seen it done once, at my DH's cousin's wedding I went to upstate. I had no idea what was going on, it had to be explained to me.

Re: Money Dance at a Wedding (POLL)
I never heard of it before I actually saw it at my friends wedding a few months ago...it was a muslim wedding and it was all the men on the dance floor jumping around and throwing money at the groom. The women weren't allowed anywhere near the dancefloor the whole night (which, no offense, I think is bs) I didn't know any better (my friend who married into the family wasn't muslim) so I started dancing and got reprimanded

Re: Money Dance at a Wedding (POLL)
So weird you are mentioning this!!!!!
My SIL--who lives in Bumblef##K PA, told me she is doing this at her wedding next week. I thought she was kidding.... I have NEVER heard of this before.
Sorry folks, but I think it's tacky. It's not like at a Jewish or Greek wedding where somebody's uncle starts the chain of throwing money on the dancefloor....
This is a conscious decision the bride and groom make and I personally think its terrible

It seems to be a tradition on the west coast.
the dollar dance is popular in the mexican culture... that's why it's so popular out there (i grew up in socal )
i did not have one. most of my guests were OOS, i felt bad asking for money on top of everything else they spent.
as a guest, i think they're fun. i'm usually the one who fans the $bill and pins it in the groom's hair... yes, i'm a dork

Re: Money Dance at a Wedding (POLL)
I have seen it happen twice and I didn't really like it - big difference b/w the dance at a Greek wedding and this one. The one I saw (non-greek) made me feel like i was at spring break!

I feel like people are talking about 2 COMPLETELY seperate things here. One is a tradition, based on your region (?) a dance where guests give a dollar to dance with the bride or groom. The second is more of a cultural tradition where the bride or groom are showered with bills.
Personally, I havent seen either. But to each his own, of course!
Neither are religious, they're cultural dances.
The one Phyl is talking about is NOT the Greek one.
The Greek one is where guests throw bills out on the dance floor. I believe that money goes to the band but I could be mistaken.
I said region, because these dances seem to be the norm in some regions of the country rather than others
D'oh I'm an azz, I read it as "religion" and not REGION...
In response, I would say, yes it is sort of a regional thing. Not a religious thing!
Sorry!

I have never seen this and I have been to 8 weddings (3 in the last 2 months). We did not have it either. I don't know the tradition behind it and my parents never even mentioned it....so no go!

Re: Money Dance at a Wedding (POLL)
I have never been to wedding where this was done.
They're already getting a card with my gift I don't feel a need to pay to dance with either of them
If I was invited to one, I would not participate.
