I have never seen this and I have been to 8 weddings (3 in the last 2 months). We did not have it either. I don't know the tradition behind it and my parents never even mentioned it....so no go!
The dance Phyl is talking about is a popular Mexican tradition.
If you are Mexican or married someone Mexican you would more likely be familiar with it.
I've never seen it done up here, but it's very common in New Mexico where my BIL was married.

DH's family is Greek and they did it with us (unbeknownst to me that it was going to happen).
It was cute, and we gave the money to the DJ. The pictures during it came out great!
ETA: they didn't play anything special and we didn't dance any special way. We were just dancing together on the dance floor and then people starting coming up and throwing money at us. It was actually kind of fun. And everyone was laughing and having a good time.

I actually never heard of it until our HM where we meet other newlyweds from different states
they called it the dollar dance
and then asked us if we charged people to come to our wedding b/c of the MTV true life I am getting married episode with the couple from SI

i did not have one. most of my guests were OOS, i felt bad asking for money on top of everything else they spent.
as a guest, i think they're fun. i'm usually the one who fans the $bill and pins it in the groom's hair... yes, i'm a dork

i have only seen this done at greek orthodox weddings, no where else. so to me, i thought this was something done in the greek orthodix culture

Didn't have one at our wedding. I don't see it as a LI thing, more of a cultural thing.
