Re: Money Dance at a Wedding (POLL)
Dhs whole family is from western PA, so i've seen it done at 2 of his cousins weddings. the MOH stood there holding open a bag for people to put money in before they danced with the bride. i thought it was kind of tacky... i gues out there, its tradition. its also more acceptable i think because people out there tend to give actual gifts for the wedding, so the dollar dance is a way for them to get some cash. FIL had wanted us to do it at our wedding in NJ, but i nixed it. i had to explain to him that in the NJ/NY area people tend to give money as the gift, so you can't really ask them to give more money during a dance!

I saw something like it on A Wedding Story once, but it was more because it was a cultural thing. The bride didn't really have to do anything, they just threw money at her and had some guy going around with a broom and cleaning it up
Other than for cultural reasons, I think it's kinda trashy...
Completely DIFFERENT dance.
This dance is when guests at a wedding go up to the bride or groom and by giving them a dollar or more, they get a dance with them.
The dance you're referring to (where money is thrown in the air) is a Greek tradition.
I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that unless it's a tradition of either the bride or groom it's not a dance that's "just done".

I went to 2 weddings upstate where I saw it... I did only see them upstate. I thought they were nice for the couple to dance with their guests but the whole money thing I thought was tacky
The only one I ever saw was at my cousin's wedding upstate too.

Re: Money Dance at a Wedding (POLL)
I actually saw this 2 years ago in a wedding down here in FL. It was the first time I saw that and was told it was a southern thing. I was also told by my aunts it is also a Polish tradition. They are Polish and asked why I didn't have one at my wedding.

I saw it once at a wedding in Maryland.
I thought it was extremely tacky as well as just really cheesy. JMO

Re: Money Dance at a Wedding (POLL)
It's facinating how different parts of our country are!
I had to chuckle when my DD told me after the planning meeting ...
"Well if that's really going on why don't I just stand by the wall and they can just come up and throw money at me"
Yep she's a got a cute wit about her
No money dance will be part of her wedding.

Re: Money Dance at a Wedding (POLL)
I've seen it at a Greek and Dominican wedding and I must say it was beautiful! I'm going to ask MrsGreek for permission to post pics from her wedding with $$ flying around her as she dances...beautiful! And its amazing that some that find it "tacky" have never actually seen it in person or know anything about it, that it is a cultural thing, etc... Good one.
ETA: I know that at the Greek wedding, all the money went to the band. At the Dominican wedding I'm not sure.

Re: Money Dance at a Wedding (POLL)
My cousin had a dollar dance at her wedding. I thought it was kind of cute. The guests pay a dollar to take a quick spin with the bride or groom. I think my sister get her dh to dance with our cousin for a minute. I think all said & done the couple got like $15.
ETA...I know that is a cultural tradition as well but I have never seen it in real life.

I've seen couples here get in excess of $300.00! Plus the guests bring a gift.

There were only 30-40 people at the wedding & it was only for one song.

Nope. See my response to MrsRivera.
There's a greek money dance and then there's another dance that is completely different.

Re: Money Dance at a Wedding (POLL)
I feel like people are talking about 2 COMPLETELY seperate things here. One is a tradition, based on your region (?) a dance where guests give a dollar to dance with the bride or groom. The second is more of a cultural tradition where the bride or groom are showered with bills.
Personally, I havent seen either. But to each his own, of course!

Re: Money Dance at a Wedding (POLL)
The first and only place I ever saw it done was my college roommate's wedding upstate in Sherburne, NY, it was at a KofC.
It would never have occurred to me to have it here, our weddings are different in the metropolitan NY/NJ/CT area than other places around the country.

Re: Money Dance at a Wedding (POLL)
I know it happens more at GReek weddings, however the money I believe isn't kept by the bride and groom. I believe it is given to the band as an extra "tip"

My comment was not aimed specifically at your post. It was in general to those who stated things as "tacky" and "trashy"...thus are unnecessary.
ETA: I'm not trying to start anything and I understand that you weren't aware of the different traditions out there. I was just taken aback by certain comments, thats all.

I'm Greek and had a Greek wedding and never heard of it. I could be wrong - maybe it's something they do, but nobody in my family every brought it up to me.

Neither are religious, they're cultural dances.
The one Phyl is talking about is NOT the Greek one.
The Greek one is where guests throw bills out on the dance floor. I believe that money goes to the band but I could be mistaken.

I said region, because these dances seem to be the norm in some regions of the country rather than others
