Re: private hospital rooms
It depends on the hospital. I assume the one your sister toured is where you are delivering?
I am going to have a private room-all the rooms at my hospital are private.

I delivered @ NShore Manhassett - IMO, the private room expense was 100% worth it -

Re: private hospital rooms
So long as my hospital only has two women per room, I probably wont get a private room. I know know clue what Lenox Hill does or how much it costs.

Re: private hospital rooms
I'm TOTALLY getting a private room.
It's a splurge that, IMO, is totally worth it.

Re: private hospital rooms
I got a private room with my 1st DS and I will be getting one for this one also.
I believe I paid $450 a night at Beth Israel in the city.
I had a c-section and I just couldn't imagine having to share a room with someone.

Re: private hospital rooms
I specifically chose my hospitals for DS and DD based on the fact that they ONLY have private rooms. That was one of my top priorities.
I had DS at South Nassau in Oceanside, and when we moved I chose Stony Brook Hospital.
I am a VERRRRY private person but I am also cheap so I didn't want to spend the extra $$ on private rooms. This way I don't have to.
Both hospitals have really, really good reputations for their maternity wards, so I felt comfortable doing it this way.

Re: private hospital rooms
We splurged for the private room for the heck of it and I was glad (I'm generally a hermit and don't think I would have been comfortable with a roomie and their visitors!).

I"m going to get one if available. To me it's WELL worth the price. I don't want to be bothered by other people's visitors etc.

Re: private hospital rooms
The hospital I'm delivering at only offers private rooms...but if they didn't I would def splurge and get one. I wouldn't want to have to deal with a roomate and whoever may decide to visit them. Plus...I wouldn't want to share the bathroom.

Re: private hospital rooms
I am delivering at Stonybrook for that reason. Free private rooms. I like my privacy and not have to worry about my guest disturbing my roommate.
I wouldn't have paid for a private room. Our budge is tight and that's one thing we wouldn't be able to afford.

Re: private hospital rooms
At my hospital a private room is $750 per night, so that would be $1500 minimum. As much as I want a private room, I can do SO MUCH MORE with those $1500+ so there's no way I'm even considering it.

Me too. I think the rooms there start at $500 per night and go up to lie $1400 per night for a suite - it depends on what is available. Mine was like $570 per night.

It's definitely way more than just sleeping by yourself. You are being checked almost hourly, you are in pain and not really in the mood to hear other people and their families and babies.......or have to be quiet yourself.....

Re: private hospital rooms
I didn't want to spring for the private room the first time, but I HATED having that roommate. She was a PITA and every time she walked past my bed she pulled my curtain open or closed - but never fixed it.
I got sick while I was there so they moved me to a private room and it was heaven! I'm hoping they haven't raised the prices too much because I'm definitely willing to spring for it now.

Re: private hospital rooms
I had a private room for 2 out of 4 nights during my stay with DD#1.
Totally worth it of you can afford it.
Night 1 was fine. I had DD at 5:23pm so I don't remember what time I actually got in my room, but my roommate was awesome. She left in the morning.
I got a new roommate later in the day and she TOTALLY su cked. She was on the phone for literally the whole night telling her birth story REALLY loud in addition to keeping all of the lights on in the room and the TV blasting. It was like I wasn't even in the room. I literally went out to the nurses station crying and begged for a private room for the next 2 nights.

Re: private hospital rooms
I am delivering at Winthrop...someone on here said they believe private rooms there are an additional $200-ish per night. Totally worth it IMO. DH called insurance company to find out for sure though - they told him if we do private room - they "think" we will have to pay for entire night's stay...meaning not just the additional $200 fee for private room. First of all - how does an insurance company "think" and not know for sure. It's United Healthcare so not some off the wall company. We are calling Winthrop next to see what they know...and then HR/benefits specialists at my job to see who can give us a straight answer. I'd hate to take the private room and then be expected to pay for the entire/full price.
Anyone else think this is NUTS? I would think we'd just have to pay additional charge b/c that is part insurance doesn't cover? It's driving me insane b/c I really want a private room!

That's ridiculous, how do they not know?? Did you only speak to one person? Was there a supervisor or someone else that you could speak to at United that might be able to give you a straight answer? The only thing I can think of is I know someone else with United that was telling me that they only covered a certain % of their hospital stay so they had to pay the difference out of pocket so maybe that's what they're referring to?
I'm delivering at Winthrop also, the private rooms were about $200ish and I plan on requesting one bc I've heard so many roommate horror stories. Only problem is that Winthrop only has 8 private rooms and it's a first come, first serve basis. Hopefully I'll be able to get one!

DH spoke to someone so I have to take matters into my own hands and call them myself. I'll demand to speak to someone who can give me the correct answer...it's just crazy. Good point on the out of pocket cost on what they don't cover...I know they pay 90% under my plan and we pay the other 10% - or something close to that. So I have to look into it more and see. I wish Winthrop would update rooms and go all private...they are always so packed there though...hate that they only have 8 private rooms. I've heard the nightmare roommate stories too...I'd pay almost anything for a private room.
