Re: private hospital rooms
I delivered at S. Nassau & all rooms are private. IMO, it is the only way to go! At night, I would shut my door & you didn't have to worry about anyone else being in there with you. Plus when you had visitors, it was nice to know that it was ONLY yours!

Re: private hospital rooms
i delivered DS at winthrop and i believe the private room was a little over $200/night. the first night there were none available so i had to share a room. i was so groggy from my c/s that i really didnt mind it so much, but the next morning i hated waking up and not having any "privacy." plus i hate to be graphic, but your first time waking after a c/s isnt pretty - there was so much blood and they made me go to the b-room and i had to walk past my roommate and her DH. it was really uncomfortable. and i know they clean the b-rooms, but i just liked the idea of not sharing mine with anyone else! i begged my nurse to find me a private room and finally got one that afternoon. i also had so much family visiting me that i would have felt terrible if i subjected someone else to all that noise!!

Re: private hospital rooms
I had a private room when I had Abby but that was assessed by need at the hands of the nurse manager in the recovery room at LIJ. I did not pay for it. I was told by my OB that it would have been cheaper to stay at the Waldorf with a private nurse.
When we have our second, I would LOVE a private room but I doubt we will be able to do it. I know they have 4 person rooms at LIJ, but c-section moms always go to 2-person rooms.

I delivered at Winthrop and had Oxford at the time - we only had to pay for the private room fee $200 or whatever it was - nothing additional.
good to know...thanks. this seems to make the most sense...I think DH just had someone on the phone who really didn't know what they were talking about. I'm going to have to call myself and get someone who knows for sure. Thanks!

Re: private hospital rooms
Does anyone know if private rooms are available anymore at either North Shore or the LIJ main hospital? I had heard they might not be due to the construction...

Ugh, that sounds awful! Anyone know when that construction is scheduled to end? I can live with one roommate, but not sure about 3 roommates!

I delivered at Good Sam and got a private room for free. Keep in mind that they are very small...but awesome for the private bath and privacy when breastfeeding for the first time.
Ask your nurse who is with you during your delivery; mine hooked us up!

Re: private hospital rooms
I just delivered at NSUH Manhasset and the construction has no interference with the rooms there already. They don't have rooms with 4 people. They do have 1 room with 4 beds but it's considered their "overflow" room in case there's too many women in labor with no room to put them. They definitely have private rooms available (I decided this was best for us) and the other rooms are only 2 to a room :) HTH!

It is SOOO worth it. I had to pay over 1K at the end because I had a C section and had to stay 4 nights but I wouldn't have had it another way. I had my own private bathroom and not have to share or have people in my room that I didn't know. We are definitely doing that again this time.
Ditto. Worth every penny.

Re: private hospital rooms
I had a private room (DS born 10/29/09) and to me it was worth every penny. I was on my time, not my roomates with sleep, company and the baby. I wanted it to be special and I am BFing so i wanted to have that special time without anyone else in there besides DH or my family (possibly your roomate's guests) I understand the financial difficulties but for me it was worth it!

When I had DD in 2007, I was told the only private rooms available were if a mom/baby had to be kept away from the general public, like MRSA. I do not believe they are available to the public unless the other rooms are maxed out, but that might have changed.
