Re: private hospital rooms
It is SOOO worth it. I had to pay over 1K at the end because I had a C section and had to stay 4 nights but I wouldn't have had it another way. I had my own private bathroom and not have to share or have people in my room that I didn't know. We are definitely doing that again this time.

Re: private hospital rooms
This time I am delivering at a hospital that has all private rooms, thank God.
I delivered DD at Roosevelt in the city. While I loved the nurses and staff there, my roomate was a nightmare. I had DD via c-section on a Wed and I went home on Fri-that is how bad it was. I was an emtional mess and this 18 year old child in the bed next to me was treating her recovery like a party-tons of visitors, stinky food, loud TV. It was a horror.

Re: private hospital rooms
It is 600+ for a private room at Mt Sinai where I am delivering and I'm really on the fence. I didnt do it with DS bc I thought it was just WAY too expensive and not worth it but after having him I feel very differently.
They avoided give me a roommate for the first couple of days bc I had a horrible epidural headache. But the last day/night they had to give me a roommate and it was AWFUL. She tried to breastfeed the entire time and was having a horrible time so there was always an LC/nurse of some sort in there and the baby cried nonstop. Not her fault but it was torture for me so much so that i may just have to spend that money this time.
I'm a stone's throw from South Nassau where all the rooms are private so I'm probably nuts for going all the way to Mt Sinai and having to shell out that money

Stony Brook has all private rooms.
I so love that Stony Brook has all private rooms. I really wanted a private room. I know I'm going to have many visitors...Dh is the youngest of 6 so his immediate family alone is a lot.
A couple of my friends delivered at New York hospital - Queens...and while they didn't have private rooms they ended up having the room to themselves, so sometimes you just luck out like that.

Re: private hospital rooms
My hospital had private rooms for everyone, but they are really small. We splurged last time on a suite because we knew we would have alot of visiters and didn't want people to feel cramped. We will get the suite again this time- mostly for DS's sake. I want him to be able to some see me and the baby and be able to bring some toys and not be on top of me.

I delivered @ NShore Manhassett - IMO, the private room expense was 100% worth it -
Me too. I think the rooms there start at $500 per night and go up to lie $1400 per night for a suite - it depends on what is available. Mine was like $570 per night.
We ended up getting the private room the 2nd night I was there. Originally I was going to suck it up and have a roomate but the people they stuck me and DH with were WIERD. Not to mention she had twins and kept them in the room with her all day/night. We splurged the 2nd night for a private room and it was SO worth it!! I loved being alone and not having to worry about waking up people and their babies.

Re: private hospital rooms
WOW!!!
Here in NC both hospitals I can deliver at have private rooms with no extra cost. They don't have any maternity rooms that you share. I am sooooo happy I didn't have to share a room when I had my boys. They were both C-sections and there were things that happened with both kids that weren't pretty and I wouldn't have wanted anyone else to see. I didn't even want the nurses to see that's how embarassed I was.

Re: private hospital rooms
I did at Huntington Hospital. I think it was $275 a night and worth every penny. I did it more for the private bathroom. Especially with the PP bleeding, it grossed me out to have to share a bathroom or shower. I also had a c-section and was there for 4 nights. I'm sure I could have dealt with it for 2 days if I had had a vaginal birth.

At my hospital a private room is $750 per night, so that would be $1500 minimum. As much as I want a private room, I can do SO MUCH MORE with those $1500+ so there's no way I'm even considering it.
Same here. I would love to have a private room, but for $600-$700 a night, it is too much. I am hoping I get lucky and get a room to myself or a good roommate and don't need a c-section so I am in and out.

I am totally fine not having a private room, I would never spend crazy $$ just to sleep by myself
It's definitely way more than just sleeping by yourself. You are being checked almost hourly, you are in pain and not really in the mood to hear other people and their families and babies.......or have to be quiet yourself.....
Still not enough to make me spend a butt load for 2 nights.

Yeah - way more - you are sharing a bathroom too - with one or more other people. Think of what happens after giving birth - the excessive bleeding etc. - yeah, not fun to share a bathroom and a shower and depending on your roommates can be pretty gross - NOT something you want to deal with after labor and delivery

It wasn't the sleeping - it's the constant in and out of Doctors, nurses, visotors - Using the bathroom - I didn't want to deal w/ someone else who wanted to keep the baby in the room 24/7 while I sent Sean to the nursery so I could sleep - And my DH was very uncomfortable (as was I) w/ the idea of leavign me at night if my roommate's DH was staying ..........

Re: private hospital rooms
The last time I gave birth, I had a private room (that we paid for) and my DH said never again! I'm like five minutes pregnant and I've already started setting aside $$$$ for the private room. Won't it be a surprise to him at 40 weeks when I hand him an envelope on the way to the hospital.

I delivered there last time & will be this time...I hear it's up to $800ish now, I won't be getting a private room-that's $3200 bc I'm having a c-sec. Last time it was frigging awful, night 1 great roommate- pain from c-sec, & took them 2 1/2 hrs to bring meds, 2nd & 3rd night, roommate had baby rooming in to BF, except she never woke up when the baby cried, I did though and during the day she had her family there, who were all sick & coughing all over the place, & her 1 kid was LICKING my son's isolette and they wouldn't keep her on their side of the room. My last night, they brought me a new roommate at 2am. I so wish it wasn't so $$$$

Re: private hospital rooms
100% worth it! I stayed in a regular PP room for the first night and begged to be moved to a private room the next morning. Luckily there was one available. I was really uncomfortable sharing the bathroom and walking around in front of my roomate and her many visitors.
*ETA- I had a horrendous roomate. Her dh/visitors used our bathroom and left it a mess, they were loud and took over the entire room. Many of her guests spilled over onto my side of the room. It was awful.

I am delivering at Winthrop...someone on here said they believe private rooms there are an additional $200-ish per night. Totally worth it IMO. DH called insurance company to find out for sure though - they told him if we do private room - they "think" we will have to pay for entire night's stay...meaning not just the additional $200 fee for private room. First of all - how does an insurance company "think" and not know for sure. It's United Healthcare so not some off the wall company. We are calling Winthrop next to see what they know...and then HR/benefits specialists at my job to see who can give us a straight answer. I'd hate to take the private room and then be expected to pay for the entire/full price.
Anyone else think this is NUTS? I would think we'd just have to pay additional charge b/c that is part insurance doesn't cover? It's driving me insane b/c I really want a private room!
I delivered at Winthrop and had Oxford at the time - we only had to pay for the private room fee $200 or whatever it was - nothing additional.

Worth every penny. I had a C-Sec so it was extra nights I had to pay for, but I could not have had that experience of a lifetime sharing a room with someone else.

Re: private hospital rooms
Personally, after seeing the private room I can't justify the cost. It's nothing glamorous, looks like the other rooms only you have no roommate. You might just get lucky though and have a "private" room without paying..........I ended up with no roommate for the first 2 1/2 days I was in the hospital. I was released the day after I got one so it all worked out. I know it depends who you get but my roommate was actually pretty nice and it worked out fine when she was there anyway.
EDIT - I delivered at St. Charles. The private rooms were $200/night.

Re: private hospital rooms
I had a private room I pd for it was around $300p/n.
Worth EVERY cent!!! There are only 2 private rooms in my hosp unless you get lucky and not many women delivered at the same time as you. You will be in the room alone with 2 beds & 1 bathroom but you will still have to share the communal shower!! Ewww...!!!
I've heard horror stories, smelly stinky food, loud & on the phone all night, complaining, tons of visitors using all the chairs etc. and TMI.... pee, blood etc all over the bathroom, No WAY!
We'll be paying again for the private room! I actually have anxiety about one being available.

Re: private hospital rooms
I had DD at Good Sam - so no private rooms. I had a GREAT roommate and have no regrets at all with sharing a room.
Personally, I couldn't justify spending the $$, I didn't find having a roommate to be a big deal at all!
