Look, I'm done commenting on this thread, I have my opinion and you nor anyone else is going to sway it.

I respect your opinion, however I disagree with it.

Please stop digging up comments I made pages and pages back from the other night as I will not reply from here on in.

At no point did I freak out on you nor did I say you couldn't have your opinion. It's clear you didn't read what I said because I specifically stated that I RESPECT your opinion but I DISAGREE with it.

Please stop trying to have an arguement with me I'm not going to discuss this topic any further.

Thank you.

that's very sad, really. But it made me wonder why are they nextel-ing? yes, maybe it's a pay-as-you-go, but maybe not. and if it's not, well that poor baby whose parents want to hold on to an expensive cell plan rather than feed them well.

A phone is a necessity if you are pregnant or have children. Period.

over food- I don't think so

where does cell phone fit into the hiearchy of needs?

Food, Clothing, Shelter, Cell Phone???

Why does a cell phone have to cost a fortune? I had a prepaid phone that cost me $20 or less a month. Must cheaper than a landline.

I've been there. I had to scrape together spare change just to spend $5 for food for dinner. It's pretty humiliating. A friend of DH's called us low lives becasue of our financial difficulties.

Re: saw something the other days that is still bothering me

wow, first let me say that my threads NEVER get this much actionChat Icon
I'm a little disturbed though that a "nextel" is somehow associated with frivilous spending. My DH had a nextel plan for years for his business & at that time you could pay a very small amount for just a few cellular minutes & free nexteling was included. I honestly have NO IDEA if this is still true. Maybe someone in their family pays for their cellphone, maybe one of them does have a job & its a work phone ????

I'm a little disheartened by how many people are inclined to think this couple wasn't trying hard enough because they had a cell phone, they had a car too, does that make them wasteful? Chat Icon

And I really understand the frustration people have with how effed up our welfare system is, but again.....this particular couple DIDN'T SHOW ANY SIGN OF BEING ON WELFARE....so I'm having trouble figuring out were all the "milking stories" fit into this equation.
Everyone is entitled to their opinions, that's why we are here I assume-to communicate.
I'll just say again that I feel absolutely blessed that I have come to a place in life where I feel its the right thing to help another human being in need...without trying to figure out if they are worth it.

if it was just two adults then I'd say, no judgements, but they have a kid, so yeah, if they can't afford to feed that baby but they have a cell phone, I think it's ok to wonder about them. To wonder if they're putting the phone, even the car, above feeding a kid.

I understand what you're trying to convey....but have you ever tried to get a job without a phone number or a car? Maybe this was the first time this happened to them, maybe they JUST HIT ROCK BOTTOM, I don't know but to say that things like a phone or a car are not nessecities are a stretch. I'm pretty sure I drove my car to the social services office in Coram that time they turned me away....do you think I would have had a better chance if I sold my car & told my boss I had no way to get to work?

WHAT IS WITH THE SINGLE MINDEDNESS ON HERE?

Its gross, disgusting and sad IMO.

Cant anyone see anyone else's point of view.

Here I sat as did others and explain how that could have been US and had you judged us the way you are NOW, ( the collective YOU) you would be wrong, yet everyone's still trying to make these poor ( literally ) people into evil people who don't feed their kids , I mean CMON.

Hard times happen. I have a cell phone. Its CHEAPER then my house phone used to be...And I need a phone obviously....

People are sooo single minded into these thoughts of what society is...Good..Bad...black ..white.

Its so sad.

This entire thread makes me so sad to see some responses.

I wonder if the gift card was stolen since they ran out without paying for anything they wanted to buy.
I know it is all assumptions BUT when you know people who scam to get things, you get very cautious of what others do.

And I'm surprised at that comment from you Beth, considering you previously helped out someone who did in fact have a cell phone and didn't begrudge that person for it. Remember? Kids, job hunting = need for a phone?

its cheaper then landline these days. and a phone is a neccesity., Thats the point that was trying to be made.

I only know maybe 2-3 people who still have land line phones. Everyone else has cell's....

Okay but when I was pregnant and if I had no phone, it would've been pretty darn difficult to get to the hospital after my water broke if I didn't have a phone to call someone to drive me. I guess we'll agree to disagree that a phone is absolutely necessary for a pregnant woman.

but it doesnt have to be? Thats what life is about. Change and moving forward. Thats like saying, anything you have seen in life thats wrong means its ALWAYS wrong.

you cannot live that way. Only YOU can change your own beliefs and be more open minded.

What if Jesus were here in this day and age? How would he be perceived I wonder?
Something to consider when a simple observation, by someone who was going to help these people, turns into assumptions of people abusing a system just for the mere fact that they were young and pregnant and had a cell phone.

ok- it's a necessity

but would you pay your cell phone bill if you had no money for food??

I don't think so

and I have a landline- so now you know 4 people with oneChat Icon

we use it mainly to fax- and since it comes in the triple play- I would save $15 a month to cancel it- so I kept it

I hear you, honestly I do. And I do feel for them. I'm just saying it would anger me so much to see a child in a situation like that if the parents had a luxury. Yes, maybe it's not a luxury, but I would wonder. I would have paid for their groceries but still, I would have wondered if they weren't decent people who fell on hard times but people who don't sacrifice for their child.

I agree we all are assuming but I think since many of us have known people who do not do the right things, we have been tainted to a degree.
I wish I was still naive about people like I was before I met my dh but I think it is better that I did find out how other people function in life so I can stear clear of them and help the ones who really NEED the help.

Really? I don't know anyone with just a cellphone. I guess it is getting more popular now just to have a cellphone though.
