I agree we all are assuming but I think since many of us have known people who do not do the right things, we have been tainted to a degree. I wish I was still naive about people like I was before I met my dh but I think it is better that I did find out how other people function in life so I can stear clear of them and help the ones who really NEED the help.
I'm sad for you that you are so skeptical of people, that you feel you need to qualify someone worthiness of your help or charity. Its horrible that you know so many people that are scammers, I think I'd have a very hard time allowing those people to be a part of my family's life.

WHAT IS WITH THE SINGLE MINDEDNESS ON HERE?
Its gross, disgusting and sad IMO.
Cant anyone see anyone else's point of view.
Here I sat as did others and explain how that could have been US and had you judged us the way you are NOW, ( the collective YOU) you would be wrong, yet everyone's still trying to make these poor ( literally ) people into evil people who don't feed their kids , I mean CMON.
Hard times happen. I have a cell phone. Its CHEAPER then my house phone used to be...And I need a phone obviously....
People are sooo single minded into these thoughts of what society is...Good..Bad...black ..white.
Its so sad.
This entire thread makes me so sad to see some responses.

if it was just two adults then I'd say, no judgements, but they have a kid, so yeah, if they can't afford to feed that baby but they have a cell phone, I think it's ok to wonder about them. To wonder if they're putting the phone, even the car, above feeding a kid.
I wonder if the gift card was stolen since they ran out without paying for anything they wanted to buy. I know it is all assumptions BUT when you know people who scam to get things, you get very cautious of what others do. It's very sad but it is a part of life.
but it doesnt have to be? Thats what life is about. Change and moving forward. Thats like saying, anything you have seen in life thats wrong means its ALWAYS wrong.
you cannot live that way. Only YOU can change your own beliefs and be more open minded.
But you can't also be naive and think that everyone's intentions are good. I am very lucky that I am now surrounded by good people BUT like I said, I have known people who live like that.

Wow...the turn of this thread saddens me. How do you know these people are spending $$$ at a carnival or stealing gift cards or milking the system?
They were trying to use a gift card to buy items, not food stamps. And apparently they were on the phone with the person who gave them the card and were embarrassed when there was no $$ on it and ran out.
Sometimes people just fall on hard times. How do you know this wasn't a couple who had just lost their job or some other such thing? How many people on here have asked for help and received it? The economy right now sux...anything could be happening to them right now. I have friends who just had to do a short sell on their house cuz they were going to lose it. He's been a handyman/home improvement guy for 20 years and business just dropped off. They couldn't pay their mortgage and refinanced in the hopes that business would pick up again, which didn't happen. She went a got a job and he got a job, but they just couldn't make the payments. They aren't milking the system, but they fell on hard times. They aren't bad people and have always paid their bills with some $$$ in savings and it all kind of ran out on them.
I would have been with Kelly, instead of judging - I probably would have felt bad that I didn't jump in to help.

These people are not part of my everyday life and I don't think I could ever let them be. I have learned not to be naive. I work very hard for the money I earn to feed my family. Others just want a handout and while I will help anyone in need, I find it hard to do so when I do not know their situation and see too many people who don't have a pot to pee in but waste their money on things that are not needed and then cry poverty.

You were reading my mind, with both stories. Why are these people having children??
DH and I have held off on TTC b/c we want to be in a better financial position before we bring a child into this world.
I get very frustrated when I see things like that. IMO it's very irresponsible.

Thank you to you and dm24angel for making these points. I think it says a lot about our society when we see someone struggling like that and just automatically assume the worst. We have no idea what their circumstances are. I remember when my DH and I first moved in together, we were going through some very rough financial times. One time we were in a similar situation where a couple in front of us was trying to decide what to buy because they only had so much to spend. I turned to my husband and said I suddenly felt lucky because even though we didn't have money to go out with friends or buy new clothes, we could at least buy food.
There are people who fall in to some really tough times at no fault of their own. Maybe they did use birth control and happened to get pregnant. It's possible. Maybe she's having the baby and giving it up for adoption. We have no idea, and therefore shouldn't judge. Sure, they could also be shacking up in a crappy apartment spending what money they have on drugs and booze. We just don't know. Either way, it is still sad that there are two young people and a baby that are suffering. It just makes me all that more appreciative of what I have.
I haven't read the entire thread but in a country with SO MUCH, no one should have to go hungry regardless of what put them in their current situation.
It isn't the economy or the president or politics in general because there is plenty of food to go around we, as a whole, have to figure out a way to get enough to everyone.
This is true too!

I feel bad for the people who have no money to eat. It makes me sad. What makes me MAD is the people who use the EBT (food stamps) cards to get cash out and then buy beer and cigarettes. Glad im paying for that!
You can't use food stamp benefit cards to get cash. It doesn't work like that. Many people get their SS checks/SSI/child support on those types of cards, so maybe that's what you are seeing.
No actually now that im not working a full time job I have a part time job at pathmark. You CAN get cash back from EBT (food stamps cards)

It sounds like their cash assistance is also put on the EBT card and they use that to get the cash out. You can't get cash out for food stamp benefits. You just can't. It wouldn't work. I just looked it up.
ETA, as a cashier you would have no way of knowing if someone had an EBT card with child support, food stamps, SSI or cash assistance. Payless takes EBT cards and I don't think people are using their foodstamp benefits there

Wow you got fast fingers. Whatever I don't care what was looked up and what wasn't all I know is I see people use their EBT CARDS to get cash back. It gives them 2 options "food" or "cash" it's on the SAME CARD and even if it is cash assistance they get that cash and buy themselves a nice 12 pack with it. WITH MY MONEY! That was my point!
It's public assistance and it shouldn't be used to get drunk

As a cashier I should now. Child support comes on a chase debit card. food stamps comes on a "public assistance" card and oh ya the cash register is pretty good and tells me it was a foodstamps tender

Well you cared enough to post about it, and I cared enough to explain to you that an EBT card isn't just for people that get food stamps, hence how someone is getting cash back.
I agree, it shouldn't be used in that way.

If one of your customers is paying with a "food stamp card" and not an EBT card like the State says they issue for food stamps, cash assistance, SSI, etc., and they are getting cash back with that "food stamp card", I think I would be making a quick call to report that person

Re: saw something the other days that is still bothering me
Well their name is on the card.
I don't think you get how it works. Food stamps and cash assistance are two different things. Both are on the SAME card. If someone is purchasing food on a food stamp card, they have to get ONLY the things allowable by the food stamp program (i.e. no organics, etc.). They then swipe that EBT card. They can ONLY get cash back if they have cash assistance on that same EBT card. If there is no cash assistance benefits in addition to their food stamp benefits, the machine will NOT allow cash back. www.otda.state.ny.us/main/publications/4596.pdf
To further the discussion about food stamps, I used to hear government sponsored commericals multiple times a day promoting food stamps on 1010wins. I thought it was odd, but they wanted to get the word out that families can qualify.

I do get how it works they have a public assistance EBT card. When they slide that card they can pick CASH or FOOD. If they pick food it will give them what they are allowed (they will have to pay the difference for certain things shampoo etc) but if they pick cash (assuming they have this option and cash available) they can pay for the shampoo and beer and anything else they want or they can take that cash and do whatever they would like to with it. I thought I got that point across in my second post, no?

Wow, that's sort of harsh...and not necessarily true. I grew up on welfare, food stamps and public assistance. We were the family that stood on line for the free cheese. My mother got divorced from my father when we were all little, had little to no education and went on welfare. Yet NOT ONE of us is on welfare or receiving public assistance. Five children work and pay their taxes.... we are all self sufficient. To the point that when my brother almost died of an enlarged aorta, he wasn't eligible for disability and we all chipped in to pay his bills and help him and his wife survive.
ETA: Because of her education and upbringing, my mother had two more children after us...
Blows that theory to h*ll....doesn't it?
Nope it actually doesn't. Your mom had to go on public assistance because she fell on hard times and like I said before, I totally get that....and my own sister had that happen to her.
What I am talking about are people who are ALREADY ON ASSISTANCE their whole lives.....can't hold down a job cause a)they just don't want to and b)they were never TAUGHT that you should work to earn what you want. They grow up seeing their moms and dads using the system and MILKING the sh*t out of it, and then when they are getting older they start having kids young....and therefore the VISCIOUS CYCLE continues.
I NEVER said that the entire system is flawed--please re-read what I said. What I was speaking of were those who DO abuse the system and continue to use the "free money" because they can. And I'll say it again, if you can't or won't work to provide for yourself and are anxiously awaiting the 1st of the month for your govt check (like members of my own family and ILs do) then you should not be producing more babies that the taxpayers are paying for. In the instance of your family, that is clearly not the case. Sadly for others, they never leave the system and grow up to be responsible adults and holding their own.
I agree. I have seen this first hand. My old assistant who used to work for me. Five years ago she had her baby. Here's the background She was a partyer. She was seeing some guy, they used to do coke together. She wanted to have a child and was going to stop at nothing to have one. She continued to party, they child was conceived while she and her daily hookup were both under the influence of coke. She had the baby, he left her as soon as he found out she was pregnant. Fast forward to two years ago when I first met her. She seemed normal, a little high strung for me. But we got along. I found out from some of her co-workers that she asks to "borrow" money for them. I felt bad for her. So once she asked me to borrow money from her. At first I thought I'm her boss, I dont' know if I should give it to her. But I did because I thought of the baby. Then as I got to know her better. She buys a case of beer at the end of the day, she plays the scratch offs, she puts money into work pools. She smokes pack after pack. Meanwhile, she is sending the baby to th ebaby sitters house with one meal and one drink for the WHOLE day. The baby is malnutrished. She came to me asking me to help her with her credit card debt. I told her that I would advise her how to consolidate her debt. I gave her some numbers to call. I'm thinking great she wants to do this. She did nothing. The baby started to have problems like ticking so she was all upset, and she I QuOTE " I didn't know it was going to be this hard" I said Cathy are you kidding me. You knew that he wasn't going to help raise this child with you. You knew you were going to be a single parents. You knew you conceived him while you were doing a hard substance and you didn't think there were going to be any problems. She doesn't think that the chemicals the two of them were using can affect her baby and now nuerologically. I have thought many times calling CPS on her. She feeds him twinkies for dinner. I have told her to go out and find a better paying job and she won't. So people like this NO should NOT have children!

Re: saw something the other days that is still bothering me
This thread makes me so sad and concerned about our society - and perceptions.
I think we forget sometimes that as humans we are all much more alike then we are different.
It seems that a lot of people (in society) look down upon the poor, or think they are better than them. We forget sometimes that we can BE those peole - easily. They are just like you - but with less money. They have the same stresses, feelings, dreams.
There is so much nitpicking about cell phones, cars, clothes - whatever....so many assumptions made on someone ELSEs observations - not even your own. Its so sad.
I think we need to see the good in people, open our hearts (and yes, sometimes our wallets) to help people - to relate to people and to know we are ALL the same people (yes, even those taking advantage of the system...its sad...but sometimes survival is primative!).
I am sure a lot of us would be a lot more empathetic if we went through hard times ourselves. We would know what it feels like to have to make hard decisions about which bills to pay and who to feed first.
Regardless as to what their situation was I have compassion for them and an open heart - I hope things work out for them and they or their child never goes hungry.

Re: saw something the other days that is still bothering me
I wish our government knew & cared about how many hardworking self supporting people in this country feel the system is flawed and that all people in it are abusing it. Here's another point of view- I am a section 8 Landlord, not everyone that receives that benefit gets a total free ride, not all of them are unemployed losers or drug addicts. I think some of you would be horrified if you saw the family that lives in one of my houses looks JUST LIKE ANY OF US....the love their kids, they go to work(one adult is disabled), they have a car-so she can go to work, they have cell phone that they use as their regular phone, their kids have toys, they try to keep the house & the yard clean & neat. While I don't know their whole story, they seem to be trying to get out of the system. They are both grateful AND ashamed. Really effed up $hit happens to good people sometimes, I'm not religious in the least bit but I never believed judgement day happens while we walk this earth.

What if it was SSI income? For all you know they are injured in some way. Why is it your right to judge how they spend their money? Even CHild support goes on EBT these days. I dont think your computer tells you its child support money right?
Your just assuming the worse. again the point of this ENTIRE thread.
Yes abuse happens, but sterotyping helps no one.

Re: saw something the other days that is still bothering me
I have a loser ex-drug addict cousin that has been on SSI for almost 20 years. He smokes....I tell him everytime I see him that I think its disgusting that he uses taxpayer dollars to buy cigarettes. Again though, this is how the system is set up....the people in it are only doing what is available to them. If we really don't like them system our efforts would be better spent expressing it to the politicians than complaining about the recepients.
