Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
What is the serving of avocado you give DC?
What about bananas?
DS has been eating avocados for a week and just started bananas. He is 23 weeks.

I used to measure about 2 ounces of avocado and banana as a serving when I first started out.
As DS got older, I increased the amt. For example, if it was avocado and chicken for dinner, it was 2 ounces chicken and 2-4 ounces of avocado.
Same thing with bananas.

I made DS's food for a year and loved it!
I still puree up fresh fruit and add it to Stonyfeld Farms Organic Yogurt. I felt so accomplished and loved knowing what DS was eating. If I can help anyone, please feel free to FM me.

Just wanted to share...
I pureed cantaloupe for the first time yesterday and mixed in some mashed bananas...it was a hit! DD loved it. She had a huge smile on her face the entire time she was eating it.

we are moving onto meats next. Has anyone done this yet? any tips?
Roast the meat rather than boiling it-- seals in the flavor. Also, use the dark meat as well as white because it has more iron.
DD loved the combo of chicken, peaches and apples--it was an easy transition to meats because of the sweetness of the fruits

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
I hope you all can help me. I have been giving DD earths best jarred food and have NEVER made any kind of babyfood but you have inspired me to start. Please help me with the following:
1. How do you warm up frozen babyfood? I read that you had to heat it up really hot and then let it cool before giving it to DC...Is this correct.
2. When you make babyfood do you always add cereal? If so do you have to add water or formula/BM to the cereal to thin out?
3. Is a food processor necessary? I have a blender and a steamer.
4. DD is 6 months old. I'm giving her babyfood 3x/day. Fruit and oatmeal cereal in the am, veggie and rice cereal for lunch and veggie and rice cereal for dinner...does that sound right?
Thanks!

That's a great idea. I pureed cantaloupe the other day and it just comes out way too thin. I will definitely add banana next time

I've frozen zucchini and mostly all fruits. If I make a big enough batch I freeze so I can take when I need it. I've never had any problems.

I freeze all fruit too. Just apples and pears so far, but it was fine.

Do any moms "make" their own yogurt as in buying plain yogurt and mixing it with the fruits they puree?
I read about it on wholesome baby food and am thinking about it. I just bought some Yobaby but I see that it has sugar added and part of me wants to keep DS from extra sugar as long as i can.
Not sure if I'm crazy for thinking that I should try this. What do you guys think?
I do this.
This is what the doctor recommended.
I bought yobaby once, it tasted very artificial to me. So I stopped giving it to her. Regular yogurt with fruit tastes A LOT better.

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
Some questions I have:
1. How the hel l do you make kiwis??? I tried to peel one and cut out the middle and I ended up with nothing so I didnt even bother cutting up the rest. I was so excited I found organic kiwis too!
2. How you make cherries? I read you can leave the skins on and just take the pit out? I found organic too so I just bought and thought about how difficult it would be afterwards.
3. Can I use the bagged spinach like nature's promise? Does that get steamed also and then pureed?
TIA!

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
Can you please post what order you did your fruits and veggies in? DS is 5 months. So far I've done bananas, apples, pears, then avocado. I'm going based on the list on wholesomebabyfood.com. So I think that next I should do veggies: butternut squash, sweet potatoes and green beans. That's all they have on their list for 4-6 month olds. But when I look at the earth's best website, the first foods that they sell also include carrots, peas, and prunes. How do you decide what to give?
Thanks!

I actually started with the veggies and then did fruits. The veggies i did (in this order, but we started at 6 months) were sweet potato, acorn squash, butternut squash, carrot, green beans, green peas. Wholesome baby food is a good guide. I think the reason that EB has other foods as stage 1 has to do with something about the way they are made being either easier to digest for baby or less allergenic. But i could be making that up, not sure

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
I have a question about freezing bananas - I mashed them up and put them in those little plastic freezer containers, but there is a thick layer of brown on the top now. Is there a better way to freeze them? Don't mash first? Thanks.

I would wait on the kiwis a little bit. They are very acidic and can cause burns on the inside of their cheeks. I have given DS kiwis twice and both times he has been fussy the rest of the day. The first time I pureed it, but the seeds didn't grind up that well. The second time I cut it up into tiny pieces for finger food. I'm going to wait longer before I give it to him again.
For cherries you can leave the skin on.
I would steam the spinach and then puree.

Thanks Michelle! I had no idea kiwis are acidic! I wouldnt have bought them this early if I knew. I'll definitely be waiting on that. Thanks for the other advice too! I'm trying cherries tomorrow...

The brown layer is OK I think it's b/c of an enzyme in the bananas. I usually put a few drops of lemon juice in my bananas before I freeze or refrigerate. It helps keep the brown away. Also, just make sure to refrigerate or freeze soon after you puree or mash and that will limit the brown too. HTH!

Wholesomebabyfood is a great guide! It's pretty much what we've gone by as well. All of the foods you mentioned above are OK to give at 5 months. The only additional food I think we did before 6 months was apricots (bought dried/ steamed and then pureed). Good Luck!
