She took him out of any kind of social situation, and sheltered him so he would never have to interact or deal with navigating the complexities of the outside world.
In her protection of him, she made a RECLUSE out of him it seems. She then decides to arm her social misfit child with weapons and with learning how to shoot at target practice. Nice work mom.

I think that it is horrible you both feel this way. Don't you realize that he wanted to kill, he planned to kill, so whether she had the guns or not, he would have killed?
I have to say that I believe in parental responsibility. The mom was his caretaker and she failed AND she paid for it. Supposedly she was someone who believed the financial world will collapse and she was stockpiling guns, water, etc. If that's the case, then she may have been a little off too. Regardless, did she need an automatic weapon? One pistol for protection is all anyone needs, if they feel they need protection. And, she knew her son was sick. Why have any weapons?

I think if you have a typically functioning child who all of a sudden changes then you know some thing is up. But, it seems that he often withdrew into himself, so if he did that in the days and weeks leading up to this horrendous act she may not have thought anything was different.
The investigation may come up with something different but for now, the only person I blame is him.

I don't know him, but I think he's a schmuck because he has given numerous interviews (for which I am sure he was paid) before these babies were even buried. He lives in California, but felt the need to reach out to the media to tell his story. Please, IMO, he's a schmuck.
Not to go off topic, but Schmuck is just the best word ever!

The news just said she was trying to commit him into a psychiatric facility, so she did know he was pretty unstable for sure based on that fact.

Also, where was it confirmed that he had "mental illness'?" I've heard speculation of Autism or Aspergers. His family has described him as "different, quiet" but not dangerous.
Do we blame the parents of serial killers? There is just not enough information yet. My tune may change but we need all the details first.
And for the record, Autism and Aspergers D/O are not categorized as mental illness, they are Development Disorders.
I really have my doubts about him being on the spectrum.... Thank you!!!

I am seriously fuming! We know NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING except what some people are "saying". NOBODY has confirmed a flucking thing. Look I get the rage I do, but as someone who has a family member that is "odd", doesn't look people in the eyes, doesn't socially engage, seems weird, and all of the above mentioned I am seriously pissssed! My family member has Autism. He is a flucking GENIUS. My Uncle is a State Trooper who has guns in his house. Has taught ALL his kids to shoot, and nobody NOBODY has ever thought twice about it. JUST BECAUSE you are "odd" or have one of the other 123879817243 things people are saying about this asshat MURDERER does NOT mean you are violent, or that YOU will create a mass murder. MILLIONS of people have mental, developmental, and physical disorders and yet DO NOT go on a rampage. It's one thing to question the mother about the guns, but it's another to say you have no sympathy for a women that was MURDERED IN HER SLEEP. But, as a behaviorist who has worked with severe behavior disorders - there is odd, and then there's a kind of odd that few can put their fingers on, but get a very bad sense after interacting and working with that person. I have seen 9 year olds like that. Without getting into too much detail, I know a kid who totally fits the profiles of these shooters. It's horrible, it's awful. He is not diagnosed with anything but has a classification of Emotional Disturbed. I will bet that is Adam was getting any kind of services in school, he received that classification as well. Not autism.

You are entitled to your feelings and opinion. But I can't imagine how ANYONE can disagree that a woman who KNOWS her child is OFF and socially off should NOT be placing weapons in their home or reach, and NOT be sending their child to a shooting range for target practice? Can't find sympathy for someone who made such a horrible choice that has RUINED so many other lives. No sympathy.

Cousin- Autism is a genius, sweetest kid you could know. LOves peole, animals, shooting with his State Trooper Dad, drawing. Gets pleasures out of taking the bus to his volunteer job. DOesn't make eye contact, is socially akward, and "weird
Uncle- life of the party, is very engaging, appears to be a loving man. HE IS A SOCIOPATH. He is someone that would kill people....not my autistic cousin.

I agree 100%...we really don't know anything. It's so easy to speculate and blame...but until all the facts really come together we will not have all the pieces of the puzzle and trying to figure it all out before we have the full picture is just pointless right now. I think thats the problem right now...this tragedy is so unthinkable and sad that people are grasping for anything to focus that anger and hate on or anything to help them UNDERSTAND how this could happen...because this is a tough thing for anyone to wrap their head around. Even the rest of the Lanza family is baffled by this. It's just too soon to judge anything or anyone else but the person who actually shot and killed those children.

Eh, to me there is not much more I need to know. I KNOW this woman owned many guns, weapons that could kill MASSES and also took her son to the shooting range. That to me is the BIGGEST factor in this entire senario. This is the MAIN thing that matters to me in this tragedy.

You can't find sympathy for a women murdered in her sleep? Tell me have you ever went to a bar or restaurant that sold alcohol to an alcoholic? SO are they to blame for this person ruining their family and not the alcoholic? Is the bar that served a man or women alcohol and they went on to kill a family more at fault then the driver since they should have stopped?

Sort of off-topic, but...I have been seeing more and more true EBD kids come in with Autism or OHI IEPs. I have two this year that do not, IMO, have autism. We're talking violent, explosive, highly social, verbally expressive kids, in an 8:1:1 ASD class. Anyone have any insight as to why we are seeing more of this?

wait...uncle as in, the trooper dad? or different uncle? bc if the dad is a sociopath with access to guns and is teaching his son about guns...then that would be cause for alarm.

wasnt it confirmed that she had semi automatics in the home and took him to gun ranges?
wasn't it confirmed that she fought the school (and probably anyone else that said anything negative about her baby) and pulled him out of school to home school him.
She should have done better IMO either she was an absentee parent, in denial or lazy either way her kid needed help and she failed him on many levels.

She had guns in the house AND she was the one who introduced her mentally disturbed son to guns including how to shoot them. IMO that means he had access to and knowledge of guns. There was absolutely NO reason for her to take her son to shooting ranges and make this his hobby. NONE.
He was NOT a normal kid who needed this hobby. He was a mentally disturbed child with issues. Why would you introduce this type of hobby that can and DID kill to your mentally disturbed son or anyone who is mentally disturbed period? WHY? WHY?
And FWIW I am no expert but I really don't think he was Autistic or had Aspergers. From my experience Aspies and Autistic people do not tend to be violent. I think his issues were much much deeper than that. I can only suspect as a mother that she knew this. So again why introduce him to guns? Why keep weapons meant to kill things/people in your house when you have a child or anyone for that matter in your household with a mental issue? Why?

twenty babies are going in the ground and she could have stopped that.
 To me this is the crux of this tragedy.

ITA. I'm not saying she deserved to die but you cannot dance around the fact that HER unwise choices lead to the demise of 26 innocent people..including 20 children. There is no way to dance around that. NONE.

I agree 100%...we really don't know anything. It's so easy to speculate and blame...but until all the facts really come together we will not have all the pieces of the puzzle and trying to figure it all out before we have the full picture is just pointless right now. I think thats the problem right now...this tragedy is so unthinkable and sad that people are grasping for anything to focus that anger and hate on. It's just too soon to judge anything or anyone else but the person who actually shot and killed those children.
Eh, to me there is not much more I need to know. I KNOW this woman owned many guns, weapons that could kill MASSES and also took her son to the shooting range. That to me is the BIGGEST factor in this entire senario. This is the MAIN thing that matters to me in this tragedy.
I know...but if he was NOT mentally ill would a parent taking their ADULT son to the range be an issue?
bc I think what peasandcarrots and I are saying is...the issue of what his mental status was is very much a speculation at this point. Some stories say he had aspergers, some say he was mentally ill or was "off" others who knew him said he was quiet but never mean, never violent and that he was actually considered one of the good kids, a nice guy etc. some say it wasn't any illness or disability...what we do know is pretty much every article said he was highly intelligent. Maybe he didn't have a "disability" per se but we know that people who are highly intelligent tend to be socially awkward or have a hard time communicating bc their brain is going faster than their mouth. maybe THIS is what he had? maybe thats why she had trouble with his school? maybe the curriculum didn't challenge him enough? but to attribute that to a disability might be a stretch. THAT is what *I* mean when I say we don't know enough.
