hahahaha...my inlaws actually do invade mexico for free dental work

This is interesting. To add to this my dad just bought a separate dental discount plan so he could get new dentures. Ordinarily a full set of dentures can be 4k or more but he is getting them through a participating dentist for less. It's still a boatload of dough for him so at 81 years old he will take out a loan to pay it off.

Our seniors or need teeth, hearing aids and glasses have to pay for these things out of pocket on fixed incomes. This is not covered!! The very things they need for quality of life.

Why is it OK that we educate all of our citizens, rich and poor, but we can't guarantee them at least BASIC healthcare?

Why is healthcare, something which has been regarded world wide as a basic human right, a privilege in the United States when education is a right of every citizen?

And for those of you opposed to any form of national healthcare, Obama care etc, are you willing to abolish public sector education? How about programs for disabled? Welfare? Food Stamps?

Or is it just healthcare that is a privilege?

I'm not opposed to covering everyone, but can we afford it? Our government can not. Our gov't can not afford a lot of things. Eventually we will be paying for this. I'm worried about my family. I'm worried about my kids. We are being taxed into oblivion and I think, how will I afford to retire? How will I afford the skyrocketing cost of college for my children. SS is not going to be there for us. What will happen to our pensions and 401k's when the gov't decides they need more $$? I feel like people do not look beyond what is happening right this second.

How many illegals are going to flood this country because of this new benefit the MC is paying for? People in Texas and Arizona see this problem first hand

illiegal immigrants are not covered under Obamacare. If an illegal immigrant shows up at the ED they will be treated, if they show up at a not for profit hospital they will be treated...today or in a year no difference.

I just have to point out that we already pay for people who don't work to have health care. This argument kills me because it makes NO SENSE since it shows NO UNDERSTANDING of what really goes on currently.

two wrongs don't make it right and do not fix the problem. this is why our hospitals are failing. this is why medicine is starving today.

this is all wrong.

ITA. This has nothing to do with why hospitals are failing. Hospitals treat uninsured and DO NOT GET PAID. So if everyone has insurance wouldn't you think the hospitals would benefit?

No, the whole should be responsible for every individual.

Wow.. just wow.

I had a long reply but realized I'd probably burn to the stake for it. But this sentiment is just.. sad.

I have always known since I was a child that my father worked or my step mother worked FOR our insurance benefits. You get a job to pay for medical (god forbid something happens). I dont know... How silly of them to teach me that there's no free rides in this world.

Apparently there are.

ETA: I owe $375 for last year's medical and will owe at LEAST $500 for this year's medical (outside my premium payments, HRA and FSA) so I can send you my doctors address if you want pick that up.

this sentiment does not indicate a "Free" ride.

this means that I cover YOU and YOU cover ME and I cover SHE and SHE covers HE.

people get so twisted and worped about all the people getting "free" rides in this country when the amount is soo small compared to those WORKING POOR who are being taken ADVANTAGE of.

Re: Obamacare YIKES!!!

Scariest thing out of all of this? How misinformed people are. This is a complex bill with lots of changes and implications over YEARS. There are no free rides. Medicaid is getting expanded to 133% of FPL - guess what in New York we have some of the highest Medicaid coverage levels already, we won't really see a big increase in our medicaid population. A place like Texas - maybe so. A large portion of the uninsured work!!! So this bill is creating "exchanges" where people can buy affordable care. If the employer does not offer insurance they pay a penalty and the employee will purchase insurance from the exchange. If the employee elects not to have insurance they will pay a penalty as well.

Thats just a piece of it, this thing is so complicated you could write 10 pages just of the impacts.

we could affrod a lot of things if corporations paid their fare share of taxes. we would be living off the high hog (or whatever the saying is) if companies like GE and Carnival Cruise and Exxon and blah blah blah didn't get over paying taxes AT ALL on billions upon BILLIONS of dollars of revenue. of PROFIT.

our society is like some sort of gladiator tourney. the UBER rich (the .0005% that run this country) are sitting in the Coliseum watching the upper-middle-and lower class rip each other to pieces for scraps.

we are sending all of our hate downward, to the people below us, when we should really be scaling the heights and knocking the people above us down a few hundred rungs.

As opposed to the serious financial difficulty that they will face if they find themselves seriously ill or injured but don't have insurance?

I separated my shoulder 2 years ago and was in the ER for 2-3 hours, got a couple of x-rays, some medicine, and went home. That was $3,000, or because of insurance, a $50 co-pay. Major difference in cost. And unfortunately because my former employers are assholes and retroactively canceled my insurance (long story, still fighting it), there's a good chance I'm stuck paying the former. Thank god I didn't have surgery or a more severe injury.

primarily payroll taxes for medicare...but obamacare includes cuts to the medicare spending. It will continue to increase for other reasons though.

So someone give me a better solution.

This is AMERICA every citizen should have health care.

Believe me most companies can afford it. It is an expense that will just need to be factored in.

My father is a small business owner and has always provided his employees with health care. It is the decent thing to do.

this is america. a place where people have to work for what they have, not have it handed to them. I do not agree with the above statement at all.

we are all guaranteed the pursuit of happiness, not happiness. it is not the government's job to make us wealthy or poor or to DEMAND we have anything - healthcare included.

since the inception of the country, people have struggled. that is what makes the country what it is. and yet, people still want to be here, people WANT to be Americans. They come here with the money in their pockets and clothes on their backs and hope for the best. This country will fail (oh wait, it is) without that very basic foundation.

Right.

It always interests me people with these views. My feeling on what makes America great obviously differs greatly from yours.

But so long as you and your family have health care I guess to hell with everyone else.

I guess those who work and do not have healthcare can also go scratch?

I sure hope you never find yourself unemployed in a system like you are speaking of.

I wonder if you really know about the "struggle".

I wonder a lot of things, but at the end of the day I can only hope that people who share your beliefs are in the minority bc health care should be a basic right, like education.

Re: Obamacare YIKES!!!

If this wasn't so serious I would be laughing.

We have had this conversation so many times.

For those of you who are worried about this bill covering people who "do not work" and "do not pay into the system" I have two things to say.

A- We already have that and it's called MEDICAID.

B-Read the actual bill so YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.

YES I'M SHOUTING.

The provisions of this bill are designed to cover WORKING people and COLLEGE students who otherwise would NOT have affordable insurance available to them.

The vast majority of people who will benefit are people who ARE paying into the system ALREADY.

There is something WRONG with a system that requires that adults be either full time employees or married to one to have access to affordable health care.

I have been there - single and employed only part time. I went without health insurance for 3 months. I was scared shitless.

There but for the grace of God....

why read a bill when I can get all my information from Fox News? Chat Icon

I have no problem with people having different opinions but I can't fuckingg stand to debate with people who regurgitate half truths and don't even education themselves on what they are talking about.

Contrary for the sake of it? Blinding believing what others say?

Read the damn bill, get the facts straight and then come back and post.

Yes, people taking care of each other is SAD.

It's SAD, y'all.

This is why our country is going to hell in a handbasket. We're going backwards instead of making progress and the mindset has never been more clearly ME ME ME.

Bottom line is that we are supposedly one of the greatest nations in the world yet we do not take care of our own citizens. That is VERY sad.

Thank you both.

Silly old me. Caring about other people.

Forget that if everyone actually believed this sentiment was 'sad' we would have NO teachers, social workers, nurses, etc. etc. etc.

And for ANYONE who thinks that nobody deserves a 'free ride' - congratulations for getting to where you are with zero help from anybody else ever in your life. You must be amazing for having built the road you drive on to your job hat you are fortunate to have right now, for pumping your water from a well, and for homeschooling yourself.

I'm thoroughly impressed.

Seriously, I'm so over the 'me,me, me' mentality. THAT is why this country is going to shitts, because everyone is more concerned with what THEY are entitled to.

There is no sense of compassion anymore.

There should a list for people who don't want to 'pay for others' so when your shitt out on your luck, we can refer to that list and make sure WE show the same courtsey to you and yours that you have shown to others.

I wonder, if a middle class person became shit out of luck, would you even be able to get any help? Ex. If my dh lost his job, UE is nothing, can't get food stamps or WIC if you have cash in the bank. See where I am going with this? Middle class has to be Me me me, because no one else gives an EFF. Not the rich, and not the people that have been draining our resources and our pockets. Not politicians and people running this country.

Do you know how many people are on welfare for life? LIFE! And then have kids on welfare for life. People dripping in gold w new cars paying with food stamps. It's a situation that needs to be handled before taking more money out of MC pockets.

Welfare for life is a myth. TANF, which is welafre, has a 5 year LIFETIME limit,

Obamacare YIKES!!!

Just looked at my paycheck...out of all the money that is taken out for ridiculous things, the one thing I wouldn't mind is money taken out to help others afford healthcare. We are all human, let's be compassionate. Life throws curve balls. If you have insurance now or access to it count yourself blessed. You never know what life holds for you and what situation you will be in. No one should ever be without access to healthcare. No one should be afraid to go to the doctor for a physical or to check something out because they can't afford it. No one.

I just have to point out that we already pay for people who don't work to have health care. This argument kills me because it makes NO SENSE since it shows NO UNDERSTANDING of what really goes on currently.

And not all people who do work have the option for health care - my mother didn't for FIVE YEARS. She was not less deserving of health care than some CEO. She certainly has worked hard, doing what she needed to do to make ends meet. These are the people who need to have some kind of socialized health care in place. It is unconscionable that WORKING PEOPLE have to suffer without seeing a doctor when permanently unemployed people do not.

And people have not 'survived for hundreds of generations' without healthcare. People have suffered and died young without health care.

Also, when we are afraid to speak up to the corporations and the people in power because they're bigger and have all the money, then we've already lost.

. Thank you so much for writing this. I could not agree more. People eat disgusting food , don't exercise , drink , smoke and generally abuse their bodies. They then become obese, develop type 2 diabetes, heart disease , high blood pressure etc. Instead of making lifestyle changes they take medication and have expensive procedures. The cycle then continues and the costs stay high. Very sad.
