Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
Hi everyone - just made my first batch of baby food yesterday . I froze everything as they are still just on cereal but I wanted to start making a supply.
My question is - I am doing organic - but do I really need to buy organic winter squashes (butternut, acorn)? I mean, they have a giant hard skin and you just scoop out the inside. If you are doing organic do you buy everything organic or just some/most things?

I have done sweet potatoes and bananas...they like both. I was going to get the Beaba but babies R Us didn't have it...good thing all I need was my food processor and a steamer. I am using the kidco trays to freeze everything.
If you are doing organic where do you get your produce? I got the sweet potatoes, bananas and carrots from Trader Joes BUT they seem to have limited produce. Did anyone use frozen organic?
BTW-I LOVE LOVE LOVE making food for them!! It is so incredibly easy.
I actualy found The Trader Joes by me to have more then even Whole Foods etc had.
I get ( organic fresh) from them...Sweet potatoes, Carrots, potatoes, apples, Pears, peaches sometimes plums, bananas, papaya, zucchini, avacados.
And Frozen from them I use TJ's Broccoli, Butternut Squash, green beans.
And the prices are so much better!
Stop and shop I get frozen organic Mango and berries ( but for my son, not the babies) ...And they have organic peaches too frozen, I use those if I cannot find fresh ones.
Which Trader Joe's do you go to?
I live near the one in Commack, they have A LOT of organic.

I was able to get organic butternut and acorn squash at Wild By Nature. I have used a non organic acorn squash before. I wouldn't stress over it too much since the skin is SO thick.

ok, so after the apple disaster, I need more suggestions...what can I give him next. he's 6 months old.
he's had
peaches banana pear apple (discontinued due to horrible gas!) prune (see above gas problem lol)
avocado (though technically a fruit I am including here) green bean green pea butternut squash sweet potato carrot
I have in the freezer blueberries, strawberries, and mango...though for some reason I am afraid to give these. I went to whole foods but they didn't have any plums. what about melon?
can I give asparagus, spinach, other types of squash???
Butternut Squash ( most babies lovev it too!) My girls LOVE mango and you can often get it frozen organic cheap Zucchini Broccoli/Cauliflower ( I mix mine with potato) Apricots ( you can buy dried ones, rehydrtae them in water and puree if you cant find fresh/frozen) papaya All melons
I usually wait on berries till closer to a year

I'm only using organic what's listed in the top 12 should buy organic list and what wholesomebabyfoods.com mentions.

How do you make avocado to freeze? I've read to freeze in slices or mash up and freeze in trays.
If you freeze in trays do you puree it with a liquid first?
If you do slices when do you mash up the avocado-right before feeding, morning of, night before...? Do you add something to puree it?
This fruit has me so confused...
I do nothing with the avocado. I open it up, scoop out the "meat" and mush it up with a fork until it's pureed that way and serve it.
I've never heard of freezing it or mixing it with any liquid.
I will feed it to DD as a snack between lunch and dinner. Or feed her 1/2 of one in addition to her veggies for lunch or dinner.
Wholesome baby foods website mentions freezing avocado. My local store has them on sale this week but I'm not going to give it to DS until the middle of the week. I'm not sure how long they would last... I don't buy avocados.. How much of the avocado did you give DC when you first started?

If you put them in the refridgerator, they will keep for a WHILE. Dont take them out till you want to ripen them. Ours last a while that way.
I slipt a half of one for two babies, mixed with a ahlaf banana each and a little bit of formula to mash it with.

Great thanks! If anyone lives near an Uncle Guisseppe's, they have avocados on sale for 79 cents. Normally I see them advertised for 99.

I have the trays from BRU (kidco) that I'm going to be freezing the food in. Is 1 of those a serving? I think I read theyre 1oz each, right?

I think I have the same ones and they're 1 ounce. When we first started with fruits and veggies, I would only give DS 1 oz per meal (breakfast and dinner were mixed with cereal). Now that he's bigger and eats more, I do two cubes (2oz). I like knowing how much he's getting so I can control how much I feed him and increase amts as needed.

Yeah, I'm thinking I need to freeze everything to make proportions, right? Otherwise I wont know how much I'm feeding him, right?

I wouldn't keep them past 3 days. Save the bananas and avocado for the end of the trip.

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
Do any moms "make" their own yogurt as in buying plain yogurt and mixing it with the fruits they puree?
I read about it on wholesome baby food and am thinking about it. I just bought some Yobaby but I see that it has sugar added and part of me wants to keep DS from extra sugar as long as i can.
Not sure if I'm crazy for thinking that I should try this. What do you guys think?

I plan on doing this. buying plain greek yogurt and adding purees. I see no reason to buy anything else. I like to control the sugar and such.
and thanks about the trip. 3 days is about what I thought and it's perfect!!!!
thanks again!

I bought plain yogurt and mixed it with fruit, but unfortunately my daughter didn't like it too much. So I started looking for yogurt with lower sugar content. I also find Yo Baby to have too much sugar and I hope to keep DD away from excess sugar for as long as possible. I don't even want her to have cake on her birthday!
I have used a vanilla goat's milk yogurt that uses maple syrup as the sweetener. Maybe I will try the plain yogurt with the fruit again at some point, though.

I wanted to use the goat milk yogurt too but it has tapioca in it instead I got the plain yobaby(no sugar in it) and have been adding fruit purees to it. DS will even it eat it plain! To me it tastes nasty plain

LOL, I think I was confusing it with Tapioca pudding(which has sugar). Yes Tapioca is fine
