I'm so confused
Jay is the sister in law who is not related to anyone? She is a family friend?
I have to catch this.

Being that she had issues of abandonment and the need to be a supermom maybe she was a closeted alcoholic and just no one knew.

This family has alot of secrets I'm pretty sure. They should get together with the Anthonys.

ITA!

Both of these stories kill me.

I wasn't going to respond, but I just cant get this out of my mind. So many Chat Icon for the families..

A few things that stuck out to me:

Everyone is saying the old friend were irrelevent, but they said Diane never dated and that her husband was her first boyfriend, her first love. Maybe he told her he was leaving her that weekend or that he was having an affair...being the only man she had ever been with and her mom issues, mix that with alcohol and pot, I can see that putting someone in a not very good frame of mind. Maybe she called her brother and told him and then found out that him and his wife already knew?

The scene with the SIL smoking a cigarette and she said "no one in my family knows I smoke cigarettes, this should be interesting..." If no one knows she is a smoker then they very well have not known that Diane was a drinker!

I think she was a closet alcoholic and that is why she was able to function with such a high level of alcohol in her system. I also think there was a lot going on with her marriage that no one knew about...

Maybe everyone in their circle was totally in denial about life/ things and she hid more than that. Didn't I read that they were having issues? Was he having an affair with Jay?

You make some great points. I watched it yesterday and can't stop thinking about it. Anyone notice that the expert they spoke to in the conference room about the autopsy results also testified in the Casey Anthony trial for the defense?

Yeah, Dr. Spitz. Jeff Ashton did say that Dr. Spitz always gets involved with high profile cases to be in the spotlight...

You are welcome. I was the same way because I don't have HBO. I've been following this case and wanted to see this.

If you google, there seems to be a lot of places you can see it at. Don't waste your time downloading crap ... still wouldn't work for me.

I found the link above and felt the need to share. You don't have to download anything. Just click on the link and watch the documentary. It's approx 99 minutes long.

Please pass the link on to anyone else that wants to see and doesn't have HBO. Just be warned that there are graphic photos of Diane dead at the scene at the end.

Everyone thinks Danny is trying to clear his wife's name. I disagree. It seemed, in the documentary, that he really hates and resents Diane for leaving him as a single father when he never wanted kids to begin w/ ... much less a kid that now has special needs.

I think allowing HBO to show those photos of Diane at the scene was Danny's way of getting back at Diane and humiliating her. The private control freak ... she would have been mortified for anyone to see her that way.

Here's the link again in case anyone else needs it.

Being a 36 yo woman who has had several strokes over the last 7 years, I don't believe for a minute that it was possibly a stroke that made her behave that way. Even though TIAs or strokes can cause odd behavior in some she wouldn't have been able to keep going for that long without totally collapsing. I feel terrible for thise families.

Re: "There's Something Wrong with Aunt Diane"

I have made the mistake of reading the comments on HBO's site regarding the documentary.

I am appalled that some people are buying into the ridiculous theory that Diane was suffering from extreme pain from an abcessed tooth that caused the crash. Or a stroke ... which there was no evidence of either in the autopsy.

The dental records regarding tooth pain were 4 years old for crying out loud!!

I have even read stupid remarks (more than 1) that Diane had no alcohol in her system because there was nothing noted in the autopsy of stomach contents. Did they read the same autopsy that I read? It clearly states that there was 6 grams of undigested, unmetabolized alcohol in her stomach!

Are people really that stupid? Even if a medical condition existed, it does NOT explain away the use of pot and alcohol to the extent that she had in her system.

I would not be surprised to find out that Jay and Daniel are (and probably was at the time of the crash) having an affair. That is one strange relationship. People have commented asking why Jay's husband was not in the documentary ... he was! Just not as much as his wife.

Was Danny w/ Jay that Thursday night when he was supposed to be at the campsite? He told everyone he went up Thursday to set things up; but, ezpass records prove he went through the tolls at 6:29am Friday morning.

Did Diane find this out and have a mental breakdown? Did Danny threaten to divorce her? Is that why she drank and smoked pot driving home? Then, did the nieces see this and she feared they'd out her? Did she decide it would be best to end it all and take all of the kids w/ her? Danny has already stated he's ****** he has to now raise his son alone when he never wanted kids to begin w/.

I do believe Danny has a lot of explaining to do. Maybe 1 of the lawsuits will force him to tell the truth under oath ... although, my hopes aren't high for that.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. I don't buy the stroke excuse any more than the abcessed tooth, bad road design, not enough signs, faulty vehicles, etc.

The ME found alcohol and pot in her system.

I just don't get purpose of questioning scientific findings. She was loaded. What's to debate?

EXACTLY!! The only real questions are why and what set her off? I don't think we will ever know.

You can read the autopsy or the police report at the link below. The police report and witness statements are very informative.

Re: "There's Something Wrong with Aunt Diane"

DH and I finally got to watch this off our DVR over the weekend.

We were both appalled at Jay's comment about her brother not wanting kids, but Diane wanted them and took responsibilty for them. Parenting should be agreed upon by both parties, otherwise resentment will be part of their relationship

One of the puzzling pieces to DH and I about the Taconic Parkway crash was the Bastardi's. The documentary interviewed at least 3-4 drivers who had to vear to the grass/side of the road to avoid hitting Diane. How is that the Bastardi's didn't do this? Was there no room to maneuver?

We didn't know a third car was involved in the wreck. The Bastardi's were hit by a car behind them, but the documentary didn't interview those individual(s).

The other question we had regarding Diane's body....Newsday's review had stated it was shown, so I knew what to expect. Do bodies normally puff up immediately upon death? She seemed a lot bigger than her pictures made her appear. How did she die since she she only had a few lacerations on her face/arms? Snapped neck?

The whole story is just so sad - the innocence of life lost. I agree with the comments that Guy Bastardi's sisters were stating. Diane's husband is in denial and the more he continues to publicly make these comments, the more he discredits the lives of those that were lost.

For the first mile and a half it was a straightaway so the cars could see her coming, but then there was a curve so it took the Bastardi's by surprise.

If I am not mistaken I believe the autopsy report stated that she died due to blunt force trauma, or something along those lines, she was probably killed instantly from the force of the impact.

I'm not really sure about what happens to a body after someone dies but I think part of the reason her face looked so swollen was because she had blunt force injuries to the head/face, including multiple facial fractures (i.e. nose and upper & lower jaw), among other lacerations and abrasions.

I read the autopsy and here is what they stated as the cause of death:
"blunt force injuries of the body with multiple skeletal fractures; lacerations and contusions of internal organs."

She was apparently going 70MPH and the people she hit head on were probably going at least 60 MPH. I imagine even if you look fine on the outside, the damage to your internal organs is enough to kill someone.

Here's my question... I have heard of so many wrong way drivers on highways. I wonder if anyone has ever considered putting those strips down on exit ramps that are fine if you drive one way, but they pop your tires if you drive the wrong way. Since so many of these wrong way drivers enter the highway on exit ramps, going over those strips and blowing all their tires could prevent tragedies like this.

I think they froze. I was in a near-miss head on collision on the LIE a few years ago. The person coming at me was in a police chase and she crossed the median and came straight for me on the diagonal across the highway.

Lucky for me, I thought to swerve to my left and she continued on into the guard rail but I was SO frightened.

So I could believe they just froze and didn't move. It happens SO fast, you can't even imagine.

I read the autopsy report- she weighed 204 pounds and if I recall correctly she was only 5'3 or so. But she did look thinner in the pics in the media.

They determined that Diane Schuler was traveling at 85mph and Guy Bastardi was traveling at 74mph. I'm not familiar w/ the area; but, someone said it was a 55 mph zone. I am assuming the 19mph over is why the Longo family is also suing the estates of the Bastardi family for partial fault.

As someone else already posted, it was a straight stretch area but was going into a curve where the crash happened. The vehicle in front of the Bastardi's swerved and Diane slammed into the Bastardi vehicle head on (looked more damage driver to driver sides from looking at the cars). Then, the 3rd vehicle crashed into the side of the Bastardi vehicle. In my opinion, the Bastardi's had no time to react ... if they ever saw it coming to begin w/.

I drive by the accident site everyday going to and from work. There is a blind curve at the point where they collided so I'm sure they never even saw her coming. Every time I pass the site I'm now always very aware of this curve.

This tragedy still troubles me so much- such a horrible waste of so many beautiful lives.
